About USDC on NEAR
NEAR Protocol is a sharded Layer 1 blockchain that emphasizes usability and developer experience. It was founded in 2020 by Illia Polosukhin (co-author of the "Attention is All You Need" paper that led to transformer models and modern AI) and Alexander Skidanov.
USDC on NEAR is native, issued by Circle. The network stands out for its approach to user experience: NEAR accounts are human-readable (like "alice.near" instead of a hex string), transactions can be paid for by the application instead of the user (no gas fee friction for newcomers), and account recovery doesn't require a seed phrase if you set up email or phone-based recovery.
NEAR's sharding technology (called Nightshade) allows the network to scale by splitting processing across multiple shards, with the goal of increasing throughput as demand grows. Transactions finalize in about 1-2 seconds and cost a fraction of a cent.
The NEAR ecosystem includes Ref Finance (the primary DEX), Burrow (lending), and a growing number of AI-related projects leveraging Polosukhin's AI background. NEAR has positioned itself at the intersection of crypto and AI, with the NEAR AI initiative exploring how blockchain can support AI agent economies.
For USDC, NEAR is a good choice if you're interacting with the NEAR ecosystem specifically, or if you value the UX improvements like human-readable accounts and application-sponsored gas fees. The ecosystem is smaller than Ethereum, Solana, or Base, but it's technically solid and has a clear niche.
Ecosystem
Ref Finance is the primary DEX on NEAR, handling most trading volume including USDC pairs. Burrow provides lending and borrowing markets. NEAR also has Aurora, an EVM-compatible environment that runs on NEAR, allowing Ethereum dApps to be deployed on NEAR's infrastructure. The NEAR AI ecosystem is growing, with projects exploring AI agent payments and autonomous AI operations. Mintbase handles NFTs. The overall ecosystem is smaller but technically advanced, with strong developer tooling.
Getting started
Create a NEAR wallet through MyNearWallet or Meteor Wallet. You'll get a human-readable account name (like yourname.near). You need a small amount of NEAR tokens for storage deposits and gas fees. Buy NEAR on Coinbase or another exchange and send it to your NEAR wallet. To get USDC on NEAR, use Ref Finance to swap NEAR for USDC, or bridge USDC from another chain using a bridge like Rainbow Bridge (connects Ethereum and NEAR).
