Frequently asked questions

Why do USDC transfer fees vary by network?

Each blockchain has its own fee market. Ethereum (Layer 1) has higher fees because of greater demand for block space. Layer 2 networks like Base, Arbitrum, and Optimism batch transactions and settle them on Ethereum, reducing per-transaction costs. Solana uses a completely different architecture optimized for speed and low cost.

What is the cheapest way to send USDC?

Base and Solana consistently offer the lowest fees for USDC transfers, typically under a penny. If you use Coinbase, sending USDC on Base is often free between Coinbase users.

Do I pay fees in USDC or in the network's token?

When sending from a self-custody wallet, you pay the network fee (gas) in the chain's native token: ETH on Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, and Optimism; SOL on Solana; POL on Polygon; AVAX on Avalanche. When sending from an exchange, the exchange typically handles gas and charges its own flat withdrawal fee.

Are exchange withdrawal fees the same as network fees?

No. Exchanges set their own withdrawal fees, which may be higher or lower than the actual network cost. Some exchanges charge a flat fee regardless of network conditions. Check your exchange's fee schedule before withdrawing.

Does the amount of USDC I send affect the fee?

On-chain network fees (gas) are the same whether you send $10 or $10,000 in USDC. The fee is for the transaction itself, not based on the transfer amount. However, some exchanges charge percentage-based fees on withdrawals.
