How we compare stablecoins

Five criteria, dated sources and the tradeoffs behind the comparison.

We compare stablecoins across trading activity, network access, scale, track record and reporting. The comparison gives more weight to trading activity, practical network access and scale. Overall grades summarize judgment across these criteria, not an automatic weighted formula or a promise of safety.

The audience is global, with the US our most important region. The best choice for an individual can change with location, service eligibility, the recipient's network and the complete cost of the route. Read the full USDT versus USDC comparison.

Liquidity

Reported 24-hour trading is one signal of active markets. It does not prove organic volume, order-book depth or your execution price. Compare the dated observation with the actual venue and route costs.

Network access

The route analysis considers native USDT support on TRON and TON. This is selected coverage, not a count of all supported networks or a claim that USDT is cheapest everywhere. Circle supports many other networks.

Scale

We compare DefiLlama's reported dollar-pegged circulation for IDs 1 (USDT), 2 (USDC) and 209 (Sky USDS). DAI remains separate. Size is not a safety score, and this three-asset set is not the whole market.

Track record

We compare the available token history, including setbacks. USDT dates from 2014, USDC from 2018 and USDS from 2024. Maker/DAI's lineage is older than USDS. Age does not prove an uninterrupted peg or guarantee future performance.

Transparency

We compare reporting frequency and scope. Circle's monthly independent reserve assurance earns USDC the higher grade here. Tether publishes quarterly reserve attestations. Company financial audits are different evidence. Sky uses protocol collateral and onchain data.

Where USDC can be the better fit

USDC's reserve-reporting cadence is a real advantage. An exchange, payment workflow or network may support USDC more directly, with lower total costs for your route. Kraken has delisted USDT trading for EEA clients; Circle France identifies itself as an authorized MiCA issuer. This is a service and jurisdiction distinction, not a blanket ban on owning USDT.

Neither issuer's token is a bank deposit. Direct redemption has eligibility, minimum and compliance requirements. US retail access to an exchange balance is different from issuer redemption. A grade does not override those constraints.

The evidence has dates

The ranking retains its 17 October 2026 source snapshot: circulation from DefiLlama and reported 24-hour trading from CoinGecko at 03:15 UTC. These are different measures and providers. The live Stats destination carries its own observations and dates; changing market data does not silently rewrite a dated article or change a letter grade.

We prioritize primary issuer, regulator, protocol and venue sources. Issuer announcements remain attributed claims, particularly where full audit statements have not been independently assessed. Source corrections or material changes can lead to a documented grade revision. Send a correction with the page and claim.

Website On X selection

Every Monday at 09:00 UTC, we search the past 30 days of X posts and reconsider our website selection. We admit substantive, source-supported posts that fit the stated lens. Eligible new candidates compete with retained posts on reader consequence, source authority, evidence and recency. Stronger candidates replace weaker ones; engagement alone does not determine the selection. This is an editorial selection, not a real-time feed or representative public sentiment.

We aim for 27 distinct posts, authors and events. USDT targets six favorable developments and three neutral or interesting items. USDC targets six concerns and three neutral items. Other targets nine important stories about other stablecoins and the broader stablecoin market. A smaller selection can publish with at least three posts per category; USDT and USDC retain their two-thirds/one-third mix. All shows nine posts: two favorable and one neutral USDT item, two USDC concerns and one neutral item, and three other-stablecoin stories. Neutral means informational, not a favorable story relabeled to meet a quota. We preserve qualifications and do not manufacture negative claims.

We check source availability and compare summaries with original posts before publication. API verification confirms the source and its availability, not the truth of every underlying claim. The displayed window and individual dates show when stories were posted. Context shows each post's source-check and context-review dates. Our summaries are not verbatim quotes. Discovery is a bounded sample, not an exhaustive ranking of all X posts.

If discovery or selection fails, eligible posts from the previous dated selection remain. Posts that are older than 30 days, fail verification or have source checks more than eight days old are hidden. Confirmed deleted, protected, withheld or changed sources are removed. A tab can temporarily contain fewer than nine posts; we never invent material to fill a slot. The newsletter retains its separate three-post policy below.

Three posts, one short brief

Our newsletter selects one credible positive USDT development, one consequential USDC concern, and one important development about a different stablecoin. We omit celebratory USDC items from this deliberately selected lens. This is not a representative sentiment sample.

We prioritize reader consequence, source authority, evidence and recency over engagement. Each edition uses distinct events and authors, normally from the previous seven days and never more than 30 days old at selection. We read complete posts and relevant supporting evidence, attribute issuer claims and commentary, and preserve qualifications that affect the facts.

The current edition was manually verified in X using a browser. Summaries are ours, with original post dates and source links. No X embed or automated live refresh is implied. A new issue requires three qualifying items; an unavailable slot is never filled with invented concerns or unrelated news. Subscriber sends and signup remain paused while the refreshed brief is proofchecked.

Sources behind the comparison

  • Tether: FY2025 KPMG audit announced complete ↗Tether's 13 Aug 2026 issuer announcement says KPMG U.S. completed the FY2025 company financial-statement audit. We did not examine the full audited statements. This is distinct from quarterly reserve reporting.
  • Circle: FY2025 annual report and Deloitte opinion ↗Circle's transparency page says Deloitte has audited its company financials since fiscal 2022. Company audits and monthly third-party reserve assurance have different scopes. Full company audit statements were not assessed here.
  • Sky: governance and the SKY token ↗SKY-token holders vote or delegate on protocol parameters and upgrades. Ordinary USDS ownership does not itself grant SKY governance rights.
  • CoinGecko: reported 24-hour trading, 17 Oct 2026 ↗Provider observation 17 Oct 2026 at 03:15:53 UTC. USDT $50.85B; USDC $16.56B; provider USDS $95.23M. Reported volume is not organic-volume verification, order-book depth or an executable quote. Stored in trading-snapshot.json.
  • DefiLlama: reported circulation for the three selected assets ↗Retrieved 17 Oct 2026 UTC, explicit IDs 1 (USDT), 2 (USDC) and 209 (Sky USDS). Values represent reported USD-pegged circulation, not CoinGecko market capitalization or a share of all stablecoins. CoinGecko's USDS supply notice includes wrappers such as DAI; its aggregate is not substituted here.
  • Circle reserve transparency ↗Circle describes weekly reserve disclosure and monthly third-party reserve assurance. This is assurance over reserves, not a guarantee against every risk.
  • Tether Q2 2026 reserve report announcement ↗Issuer announcement dated 31 Jul 2026, covering 30 Jun 2026. Quarterly attestation prepared by BDO. The then-ongoing company audit was subsequently announced as completed on 13 Aug 2026; see the separate KPMG audit source. Attestations and annual financial-statement audits have different scopes.
  • Circle: discontinuing USDC on TRON ↗Circle stopped minting native USDC on TRON in 2024 and wound down its remaining support. Chain support is a use-case consideration, not evidence of misconduct.
  • Sky: What is USDS? ↗USDS is a USD-denominated stablecoin of Sky Protocol. USDS and savings receipt tokens such as sUSDS are different assets. Holding plain USDS does not itself earn the Sky Savings Rate.
  • Tether Wallet supported networks ↗The current official Tether wallet FAQ lists USDt support on TRON. Read alongside Circle’s native-USDC discontinuation announcement; this is not a universal cheapest-transfer claim.
  • Kraken: stablecoin changes for EEA clients ↗Notice updated 13 Apr 2026. USDT is delisted for Kraken EEA clients; trading, buying and selling are unavailable there. This does not establish a blanket ban on possession or every venue.
  • Circle France: MiCA issuance authorization ↗Circle France identifies itself as a licensed electronic money institution authorized to issue USDC and EURC as regulated e-money tokens in the EEA/EU. Check the exact venue and jurisdiction for availability.
  • Tether direct issuance and redemption fees ↗Direct acquisition or redemption has a published $100,000 minimum and eligibility requirements. This is different from buying, selling, or transferring via third parties.
  • Tether supported protocols ↗Official integration list includes USDT on TRON. This is one network example, not a claim of universal access or lower fees.
  • Tether / BDO: 30 Jun 2026 reserve report ↗Asset table on PDF page 9 includes Treasury bills, cash and repos, plus gold, Bitcoin, loans and investments. These have different risk profiles.
  • bitFlyer: DAI and USDS upgrade history ↗The exchange’s September 2025 handling notice records that conversion between DAI and USDS has been available since September 2024. This corroborates the introduction year; it does not reset the earlier Maker/DAI lineage.
  • Tether: USDt launches on TON ↗19 Apr 2024. Native USDt on TON; continued support is also listed on Tether’s current supported-protocols page. This does not establish uniform Telegram-wallet availability.
  • Circle: native USDC network list ↗The page lists 38 native networks as of 16 Sep 2026. TON is not listed. That is not a claim that no bridged or wrapped USDC can exist there, nor a total-coverage comparison.
  • Tether: original USDt launch ↗Tether dates the first USDt launch to 6 Oct 2014. A longer history is one comparison criterion; it does not establish uninterrupted peg stability or guarantee future performance.
  • Circle: USDC history ↗Circle states that USDC launched on Ethereum in September 2018.
  • Maker/Sky: USDS token initialization ↗Sep 2024 primary governance record for the new USDS token and associated products. The displayed 2024 date is for USDS, not the beginning of Maker/DAI.
  • Sky: the earlier Maker protocol lineage ↗28 May 2026. Sky describes more than seven years of protocol operation, extending back to Maker. USDS’s 2024 introduction does not erase that earlier history.
  • CFTC: Tether reserve-statement settlement, 2021 ↗15 Oct 2021. The Tether order imposed a $41M penalty over historical reserve statements. The separate $1.5M Bitfinex order is not included in that Tether figure.
  • New York Attorney General: Tether and Bitfinex settlement, 2021 ↗23 Feb 2021. The settlement required Bitfinex and Tether to pay $18.5M and imposed reporting and New York activity restrictions.
  • Circle: SVB reserve access restored and depeg closes, 2023 ↗13 Mar 2023. Circle described the SVB-linked depeg and confirmed access to the $3.3B reserve deposit following the US authorities’ deposit protection announcement.

Longer token history

USDT launched in 2014 and USDC in 2018. We value the longer history available to inspect. Age alone does not prove safety, a flawless record or uninterrupted price stability.

USDS was introduced in 2024 through the Maker/Sky upgrade. Its Maker/DAI lineage predates the new token, so this is a token-introduction comparison, not the entire protocol’s operating age.

The history includes setbacks. In 2021, Tether settled a CFTC reserve-statement case with a $41M penalty; a separate New York settlement required Bitfinex and Tether to pay $18.5M. USDC temporarily depegged during the March 2023 SVB crisis; Circle subsequently confirmed access to its $3.3B SVB deposit. These are dated events, not claims about today’s reserves.
