About USDC on Arbitrum

Arbitrum is an Ethereum Layer 2 network and the largest L2 by total value locked (TVL). It launched in August 2021 and has attracted a massive DeFi ecosystem that rivals Ethereum mainnet in breadth, while offering dramatically lower fees.

For DeFi power users, Arbitrum is often the chain of choice. It hosts GMX (one of the largest perpetual trading platforms), Pendle (yield tokenization), Aave, Uniswap, Curve, Camelot, and hundreds of other protocols. The depth of DeFi options on Arbitrum means you can do nearly everything you'd do on Ethereum mainnet, at a fraction of the cost.

USDC on Arbitrum is native, meaning it's issued directly by Circle (not a bridged or wrapped version). Circle launched native USDC on Arbitrum in June 2023, replacing the older bridged USDC.e token. If you see USDC.e in your Arbitrum wallet, that's the legacy bridged version. Native USDC (just labeled "USDC") is the one you want.

Arbitrum is fully EVM-compatible, which means every Ethereum tool works here. MetaMask, Rainbow, Rabby, Ledger, and Trezor all support Arbitrum. Just add the Arbitrum network to your wallet and you're ready to go. Fees are typically between $0.01 and $0.10, and confirmations take about two seconds.

Arbitrum uses an optimistic rollup design. Transactions are processed off Ethereum mainnet, but the data is posted to Ethereum for security. A challenge period allows anyone to dispute a fraudulent transaction. In practice, this means Arbitrum inherits Ethereum's security while being much faster and cheaper.

The ARB token is the network's governance token. It's used for voting on protocol upgrades and treasury management through Arbitrum DAO, one of the largest and most active DAOs in crypto.

Ecosystem

Arbitrum's DeFi ecosystem is one of the most developed in crypto. GMX is a leading decentralized perpetual exchange with billions in volume. Pendle enables yield tokenization and fixed-rate strategies for USDC. Aave, Compound, and Radiant provide lending markets. Uniswap, Camelot, and Curve handle swaps and liquidity. Treasure powers gaming. The ecosystem includes hundreds of protocols across lending, trading, yield, and NFTs, making Arbitrum a one-stop shop for DeFi users who want Ethereum compatibility at lower cost.

Getting started

Add the Arbitrum One network to MetaMask or use a wallet that supports it natively (Coinbase Wallet, Rainbow, Rabby). You'll need a small amount of ETH on Arbitrum to pay gas fees. You can bridge ETH from Ethereum using the official Arbitrum bridge, or withdraw directly to Arbitrum from exchanges like Coinbase, Kraken, or Binance. To get USDC on Arbitrum, either buy it on an exchange and withdraw to Arbitrum, or bridge existing USDC using Circle's CCTP or Across.
